Peterborough, ON – A tentative agreement has been reached between Trent University and the union representing the institution’s part-time instructors.
Negotiators for Unit 1, Local 3908 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 3908-1) and Trent reached the deal following a marathon round of bargaining between the parties, who were assisted by Provincially-appointed mediator Gerry Lee.
The tentative agreement averts a labour disruption at Trent ahead of a March 2 deadline.
“This wouldn’t have been possible had it not been for the extraordinary support we’ve received from students and student groups, faculty and the broader Trent and Peterborough communities,” said Mitch Champagne, President of CUPE 3908.
An afternoon solidarity rally scheduled for Sunday March 1 at Del Crary Park has been cancelled.
Champagne also thanked Provincial mediator Lee, “for his invaluable assistance in getting all parties focused on the goal of negotiating a fair settlement without a disruption in service.”
Members of CUPE 3908-1 will hold a ratification meeting to review the proposed tentative agreement and vote on whether to accept or reject the deal. Until members have had an opportunity to review the proposed settlement, the union will not be commenting further.
