This past weekend, CUPE members attended the 2025 Ontario New Democratic Party convention in Niagara Falls. In some ways, this convention was a return to our party’s roots: the Ontario NDP was formed by workers and farmers at its founding convention in Niagara Falls in October 1961.
On Saturday, ONDP leader Marit Stiles faced a leadership review. In the resulting vote, she received the support of 68% of delegates and will continue as leader of our party. However, the vote is unquestionably a qualified endorsement and it reflects some of the dismay and unhappiness that party members, activists, and those of us in the labour movement have felt in the wake of the last provincial election results.
This dissatisfaction is something that Marit herself has acknowledged. At the convention, she committed to making significant changes in the party. CUPE Ontario is committed to working with the leader, the Ontario NDP caucus, and allies to rebuild and strengthen our party – because there is so much at stake for working people in Ontario.
We look forward to working alongside Marit and the other twenty-six amazing Official Opposition NDP members of provincial parliament. We know we all share the goal of making life better for Ontario’s workers, whose labour underpins everyone’s success.
