During the month of April, we are asking that you and your membership write and/or visit your MPP to discuss the state of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

Since the time of the Harris government, Ontario employers have been pushing for reductions in benefits for injured workers and survivors of workers who have died from occupational diseases. Today, the WSIB seems to favour employers not injured workers. It’s time that we lobby for change that improves the lives of injured workers, their families and those suffering from occupational diseases.

2013 marks the 100th year anniversary of the Merideth Report, which was the foundation for the original compensation system in Ontario. We can be very proud that we created a public, no-fault system of workers’ compensation in this province. Now is the time for our government to step in to ensure that this system is restored to guarantee balance and fairness.

CUPE Ontario, as well as the broader labour movement will be participating in this lobbying effort. Please encourage your membership to actively take part in this initiative by writing letters or visiting their MPP. A sample letter and speaking notes are attached for your reference and use.

In Solidarity,

On Behalf of the CUPE Ontario Injured Worker Advocacy Committee

Fred Hahn, President           Candace Rennick, Secretary-Treasurer
