Sessional faculty at the University of Guelph, members of CUPE 3913, are in the midst of a tough round of bargaining that will reach critical stage early next week.

One of the major issues preventing the parties from achieving a settlement is the University’s unwillingness to establish a fair system permitting sessional faculty to exercise the Right of First Refusal (RoFR) for job security.

Currently, RoFR only lasts four semesters and management can easily bypass the system through a number of methods, violating the spirit of the collective agreement and throwing the door open to abuse, as well as contracting out of work.

The University claims one of its key missions is to ‘Improve Life’. So why is University of Guelph unwilling to take simple steps to improve the lives of its own workers?

A fair system exists on other campuses, one that provides stability and security to precariously employed sessional faculty.

YOU can help!

Use the form below to send a letter to Guelph University management to use the time available to negotiate a fair contract for sessional faculty, one that includes meaningful, robust job security that improves the lives precarious workers. It only takes a few moments and sends a clear message to Guelph U that the members of CUPE 3913 aren’t alone in their struggle for fairness.

Dear Guelph University Management,

I am writing to express my support for the members of CUPE 3913. Sessional faculty at Guelph U deserve stable, secure work that includes equitable provisions for Right of First Refusal.

This institution claims its mission is to ‘Improve Life’. The lives of sessional faculty are no less worthy of improvement than anyone else.

I urge the University of Guelph to do the right thing and negotiate a fair contract with their sessional faculty.

Sincerely,
