Public Works employees ratify agreement with Region of Peel
“All we need now to restore service is for Regional Council to do its part” and ratify, says CUPE 966 President
Striking Region of Peel Public Works employees, members of Local 966 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 966), have today voted to accept a tentative agreement.
“Our members are looking forward to returning to work and restoring the great services Peel residents deserve and depend on,” said Mary Jo Falle, President of Local 966.
The tentative agreement ratified by Public Works employees contained some improvements over the offer rejected two weeks earlier by the same group of employees.
Today’s ratification vote by Public Works employees means that the only barrier to restoring full service to the region is Regional Council, which also needs to ratify the agreement to end the six-week labour dispute.
“All we need now to restore service is for Regional Council to do its part and ratify this agreement,” said Falle.
Representatives for the Region of Peel have indicated that Council should be able to vote on the package as early as Monday. If Council does ratify the agreement Monday, full service to the region could be restored as early as Wednesday morning.
Falle thanked residents for their patience and support during the strike.
“We know this dispute between our members and the Region of Peel has inconvenienced people, and we look forward to providing them with the best possible service,” she said.
Local 966 Public Works employees provide a wide range of services to residents, including drinking water inspections, fire hydrant and water main service and maintenance, fleet maintenance, and operating the region’s community recycling centres and water pump and treatment stations.
