Hydro One belongs to all Ontarians
For over 100 years, Ontario’s public utilities have kept our lights on. They deliver power to our homes, they repair our wires after storms, and they do it for the best price possible.
The Liberal plan to privatize 60% of Hydro One is a dangerously short sighted way to finance public infrastructure. Here are three reasons we should keep it public.
Privatizing Hydro One will drive up rates. That’s bad for consumers, bad for business and bad for the economy. The more our electricity system gets privatized, the less we’ll be able to count on the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) to prevent rate increases.
Reliable electricity is just too important to our way of life to give up majority public control and accountability over Hydro One. That’s why our electricity system has been public for over 100 years and why most voters want to keep it that way.
Giving up a reliable, annual revenue stream that has averaged $913 million per year since 2000 for a one time only cash grab, and the loss of majority control, is bad public policy and will reduce government’s ability to balance the budget and protect public services for future generations.
