On behalf of CUPE Ontario, we would like to thank Paul Moist for 40 years of activism and commitment to the union movement. Brother Moist served as President of CUPE National for 12 years and announced yesterday that he will not stand for re-election at the CUPE National Convention in November.

Brother Moist became a CUPE member in 1975, working in a number of different positions for the City of Winnipeg. He spent more than a decade as a CUPE national staff representative, was President of CUPE Local 500 for ten years and also served as CUPE Manitoba President.

A well known voice on the national and international stage, Brother Moist has spent his life defending the collective bargaining rights of CUPE members and advancing human rights and equality issues around the world through his work with the union’s Global Partner, Public Services International. A passionate and outspoken advocate for expanding pension coverage for all Canadians, one of the many roles he has taken on as Vice President of the Canadian Labour Congress.

After a lifetime dedicated to advancing the cause of working people and acting as a fierce defender of CUPE members’ rights, working conditions and public services, we wish Brother Moist all the best in his future endeavours. We also take this opportunity to thank his partner Marion and his family for sharing him with the movement for over 4 decades.

Paul, for the support, encouragement, mentoring, leadership and friendship, we thank you. Well done Brother.

In lasting solidarity,

Fred Hahn
