TORONTO – The City of Toronto’s outside workers, represented by Local 416 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 416), have voted overwhelmingly in favour of taking strike action if a fair contract cannot be reached by the union and the City of Toronto.
The vote was held on January 14 and 15, with the membership delivering a strong mandate for taking strike action, if necessary.
“We have to be prepared, which is why we decided to hold the strike vote now. I wouldn’t read too much into it, discussions with the city will continue. Our objective has always been to get a fair deal for our members at the bargaining table.” said Eddie Mariconda, President of CUPE 416. “But the City needs to know how serious our members are about negotiating a fair contract. They sent a pretty clear message that they want a contract that protects city services and respects the work that they do.”
CUPE 416 and the City of Toronto will begin meeting with a provincially appointed conciliation officer later this month.
Their last contract expired on December 31, 2019.
