To mark Developmental Service Worker Appreciation Day across Ontario (Wednesday, January 29), CUPE’s front-line support workers in developmental services are hosting visits to their workplaces by their MPPs. CUPE workers invited MPPs to learn more about the work of those who support people with developmental difficulties and their families.
CUPE represents 8,000 direct support workers in developmental services in Ontario and holds Developmental Service Worker Appreciation Day each year to highlight the vital supports and services that direct support workers provide to people with developmental disabilities in the community.
In their discussions with MPPs, member are focusing on the joys and challenges of working in Developmental Services. Among the points of discussion are: the impact of underfunding on staff and its related impact on services; the relation between low wages and the retention of qualified staff; the lack of full-time jobs and benefits for part-time workers and how these issues impact continuity of care for supported individuals; staff cuts and the effect on quality of service.
