When a severe storm flooded Toronto homes, CUPE Local 416 members took to the streets of Etobicoke to help clear away a mountain of garbage created as residents cleared out damaged furniture, rotting food and waterlogged building materials.

With the help of Toronto’s Solid Waste workers, the streets of Etobicoke were cleared quickly and efficeintly.

“They did a great job,” said Local 416 Vice-President Dave Hewitt. “I think our members really showcased how invaluable they are and how integral they are to the well-being of the community.”

Local 416 created an online video to tell the story, which is part of a new social media awareness campaign being launched by Local 416 that pays tribute to hard-working members.

“We want to give our members the thanks they deserve for their hard work,” said Hewitt. “They do a lot for the community and we want to expose that.”

The campaign, which includes online video and social media, will feature each of the local’s 12 divisions, focusing on specific jobs that civic employees do and the benefits they provide to the community.

CUPE Local 416’s membership consists of city workers from Waste Water, Transportation, Yorktown Family Services, Port Authority, Community Housing, EMS, Corporate Services, Solid Waste Management, Animal Services, Parking Authority and Parks & Recreation.
