New VP for LGBTQ workers wants safe workplaces

B821280135Z_1_20130611063537_000_GNO10HT8M_5_Content.jpgDespite years of progress, most workers are still afraid to “come out” to employers and coworkers — and that’s something Hamilton native Marlon Picken wants to change.

Picken’s platform for that effort will be his new post as diversity vice-president, LGBTQ, with the Ontario branch of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

CUPE created the post at its convention last year, adding it to existing vice-president posts for aboriginal and racialized workers. Picken was elected in a three-way race for the position by the union’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual and queer caucus. more
