CORNWALL, Ont. – The 90 Paramedics, workers represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 5734 held a vote last night, on the recommended three year tentative agreement reached by their bargaining committee.

The bargaining committee had to hold two meetings to accommodate all shift workers, members of Local 5734 working in the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry, as well as in the City of Cornwall. The vote resulted in a large support of a three year agreement.

“We are happy that we could reach an agreement on what our bargaining priority was which included the return to work protocol for Paramedics being injured on the job” said Local 5734 President Elliott Montford. “We provide emergency services to a very large territory and we have three members that were injured in the last six months. Our members are happy to have this issue resolved,” he added.

Highlights of the new collective agreement include new language for benefits and wage increases in each of the three years of the new contract.

The new contract between the City of Cornwall and CUPE Local 5734 will have to be voted on by the City Council in its regular meeting of March 28, before being implemented.
