OTTAWA, Ont. Support staff at Carleton University, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 2424, have voted 97 percent in favour of a tentative agreement with the administration, averting a strike that was scheduled to commence on Thursday.
This was a very difficult round of bargaining. All three major unions on campus found themselves in an acrimonious situation with the Carleton administration. When Carleton finally took note, CUPE 2424 was on the brink of a strike, said Wiz Long, president of CUPE 2424, We are very glad it didn’t come to that.
Highlights of the new collective agreement include improvements in job security and wage increases in each of the four years of the collective agreement.
The agreement will not be final until it is ratified by University’s Board of Governors. The vote is expected to happen sometime later this week.
A November 22nd strike deadline remains in effect for CUPE Local 4600 representing 2200 Contract Instructors and Teaching Assistants. Carleton Administration needs to listens to the concerns of all its stakeholders, said John Gillies the National Representative for CUPE 4600. If they start listening, we will achieve a deal before Monday. Negotiations are scheduled for Friday and will continue all weekend if necessary.
This month, Carleton University has faced strike deadlines by all three of its major labour groups representing faculty, support staff, teaching assistants and contract instructors.
