Eastholme long-term care workers to rally for more hours of care
POWASSAN, Ont. Long-term care workers at Eastholme Home for the Aged in Powassan, Ontario, will hold an information picket and rally on Monday, October 18th, at 3:00 pm, to highlight morale problems and the need for more hours of care at the home, since workers have been without a contract since 2008. Arbitration talks are not scheduled until April, 2011.
CUPE has long been campaigning for 3.5 hours of care per day, per resident, as a minimum standard of care, said CUPE Local 1339 president Amanda Farrow, representing 100 workers at the home. While Eastholme is not quite there yet, the staff work hard to provide quality care, and increasing capacity to 3.5 hours per resident would reduce wait times for bathing, health and personal care, and allow more interactions with residents it’s a question of quality of life.
