SUDBURY, Ont. Fred Hahn, President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario, led a delegation of public sector workers from his union in a march through Sudbury on Monday, March 22, 2010, showing solidarity with area nickel miners who’ve been on the picket line since July while the giant multi-national Vale Inco tries to force Sudbury into submission.
CUPE members are here because we’ve all experienced this recession, and all of us, private sector and public sector workers alike, need everyone to be working if we’re going to recover, and we say to Vale Incoif you have any commitment to Canada at all, then you should return to the bargaining table until there is an acceptable settlement so people can go back to work, Hahn told the marchers.
CUPE members came to Sudbury by bus from Guelph, Hamilton, Ottawa, Toronto, Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay to show their support for the nickel miners and to express solidarity with this northern community.
CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn traveled from Toronto and reported that a collection on his bus raised over $850 for the striking steelworkers.
CUPE Local 4705 President Steve Speck attended the march and presented a cheque for $5,000 donated by municipal workers in Sudbury.
Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Sudbury steelworkers, Hahn said he is inspired by the spirit shown by the Sudbury community as it rallies around the nickel miners and their families.
CUPE is Ontario’s largest trade union representing over 230,000 public sector workers.
