TORONTO (Marketwire) – CUPE Local 4400, which represents 11,000 employees of the Toronto District School Board, will make a major financial donation to help keep Toronto school pools open.

At a media conference this afternoon, John Weatherup, President of Local 4400, will present a cheque for $100,000.00 to Bruce Davis, Chair of the Toronto District School Board.

“We believe that this contribution will put the fundraising over the top and will keep Toronto school pools open for another year,” said John Weatherup, in a media statement released today.

“The threat to close our school pools has become a symbol of unthinkable cutbacks to public education. These pools are so important to so many communities. It’s not just students. People of all ages use the pools. The range of pool programs is incredible. There are pool programs for seniors, separate swim classes for Muslim girls, physiotherapy, and many more.”

“We’re happy to be doing this. Our members and their children and their neighbours use these pools. But let me be clear about one thing – these pools need permanent funding from the provincial government. The funding formula for education is under review this year and it must be fixed.”

“And I want to take this opportunity to remind the public that dozens of schools, along with their pools, still face closure by the TDSB. West Toronto Collegiate, for example, may be closed, and it has a state-of-the-art accessible swimming pool. We are far from being out of the woods on this issue.”
