CUPE Ontario and the Indigenous Council wish to express their sorrow at the death of Indigenous leader Murray Sinclair and extend condolences to his family and friends. He was a distinguished lawyer, judge and human rights advocate, as well as the leader we needed when he took the role of chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Murray Sinclair’s life and work will continue to inspire our union’s work around truth and reconciliation, promoting Indigenous rights in CUPE, increasing participation of Indigenous members, and fighting anti-Indigenous discrimination.

We urge locals and members, in honour of Murray Sinclair, to revisit the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 calls to Action and ensure that we are taking what steps we can to help reconcile with Indigenous people. His is a legacy that will continue to shape our quest for justice for  Canada’s Indigenous peoples.
