Some 170 developmental service workers at Community Living Sarnia-Lambton are hoping for good news when their bargaining team resumes negotiations Oct. 18.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) local 4370 has been without a contract since March 31 and there have been no negotiations since the spring.
It’s one of 58 agreements being negotiated by CUPE for the provincial union’s 8,000 members across Ontario, with working conditions and improved health and safety issues top of mind.
“We just need the government to step up and we need the employers to step up and say this is a viable sector and we need to fund it properly,” said Brian Biggers, president of the local in Sarnia-Lambton.
An estimated 80% of members are part time or casual workers, he said, and there’s a high rate of turnover because of a lack of full-time positions. more
