Teachers, support workers slam Vaughan MPP at town hall
It was meant to give residents a chance to discuss a wide range of issues with Vaughan's representative at Queen's Park.
Instead, Liberal MPP Steven Del Duca's inaugural town hall meeting turned into a heated debate with teachers and school support staff over the province's controversial legislation limiting bargaining rights, cutting sick days and imposing a wage freeze, among other things.
"The issue is that we have always been able to negotiate with our employer. It's something we've had the right to do for years and years and years. It is now going into the hands of the education minister, where we have no right to negotiate with our employer," said Elena DiNardo, president of the local union branch representing York Catholic District School Board support staff. "If the minister doesn't like something, she will take it away. This is taking our constitutional rights away. This is your children's future, our children's future that we're fighting for."
