YWCA Toronto is a lifeline for women and gender-diverse people in crisis. Workers run shelters, protect survivors of domestic violence, and help families find housing and stability. They save lives every day but they are in crisis too. Most work second or third jobs, two-thirds can’t put money aside for savings, and 1 in 10 rely on food banks.

The YWCA is a feminist giant, known for building a more equitable society. So why are they failing their own staff – the majority of whom are women?

YWCA workers need a fair deal and a real raise. Tell the YWCA to live their values and invest in their workers.

SUBJECT: Do right by workers. Invest in CUPE 2189 members.

EMAIL:

The YWCA is a vital part of Toronto’s social safety net, supporting our most vulnerable. Yet, CUPE 2189 members who deliver these life-saving programs—are struggling and in crisis:

  • 71% of workers struggle to pay monthly bills
  • 46% of workers have cut back on food each month
  • 72% of workers can’t save or have drained their savings account
  • 10% of workers regularly use food banks

After years of a 1% wage cap under Bill 124, workers can’t afford to fall further behind. They use Toronto’s benchmark to assess Rent-Geared-to-Income support for clients in need of housing. Based on their pay, nearly all of your workers qualify for RGI housing.

That is appalling. These workers are burnt out and broke, but they deserve to thrive with just one job.

I urge you to commit to your workforce by offering a real wage increase.

Sincerely,
