‘We Take the Time to Care’ to public outside Scarborough care facility
TORONTO, Ont. – Faced with continuing cuts to hours of care for residents, staff at the Wexford Residence, today, staged a public information session outside the Scarborough long-term care facility.
Chanting, ‘Wexford, Wexford, don’t go there, let us take the time to care,’ the members of Local 3791 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 3791) were joined by their supporters outside the Wexford for a boisterous event that highlighted the facility’s continuing moves farther away from an acceptable level of resident care.
“Our members want to take the time to care for residents, but that’s not possible when the Wexford continues to cut staffing hours,” said Claudia George, president of CUPE 3791.
“Instead of getting closer to an acceptable standard of care, the Wexford is moving farther and farther away,” she added.
Recently, the Wexford cut more than 200 hours of weekly care to residents, moving the facility farther away from the generally accepted care standard of four hours of direct care per resident.
Candace Rennick, Secretary-Treasurer of CUPE Ontario, said the Wexford needs to “work with these dedicated staff to lobby Queen’s Park to ensure residents are receiving the level of care they need and deserve.”
