ELMVALE, ON – Municipal “outside” workers in the Township of Springwater became the newest members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) today. The Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) issued a decision today confirming last week’s strong vote in favour of unionizing.

The workers perform important services including maintaining the township’s roads, parks and facilities.

“It has been very encouraging seeing this group pull together,” said Craig Saunders, a CUPE representative who has been involved in the organizing drive. “Today they have new rights and the support they needed to make their voices heard. We’re looking forward to negotiating a first collective agreement and improving the work culture in Springwater.”

CUPE is the largest union in Canada, representing more than 700,000 workers in education, healthcare, municipalities, social services, universities, transportation and communications.
