York University is a thriving, safe campus thanks to the work of goSAFE and CCTV workers. They walk students home, monitor security systems, and interact with members of the public at all hours. Just like many in the community, they are students, pursuing higher education while trying to keep up with the sky-high cost of living in Toronto. They also pay rising tuition fees to their employer, York University.

Despite the crucial work that they do, the university does not want to pay a living wage. All this while the top administration continues to receive lavish salaries and bonuses. Their ask for paid sick days has also been rejected, not only putting the workers but the public’s health at risk.

York University’s safety workers need your support. Tell the York University administration that you value these campus services and want to see the workers receive a fair contract. One that respects workers, protects health, and combats the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Dear York University administration,

I am concerned that York University is not negotiating a contract that values the essential work that our campus safety workers perform.

I want to see York as a campus where our safety workers are paid a living wage, especially considering that part of their expenses include tuition fees that all York students are subject to. It is not fair that safety workers get neglected as they push for decent wages.

The paid sick days they are asking for keep everyone safe, including the members of the public on campus that York University says they care about. We all benefit from a contract that allows sick workers to stay home.

Every week, thousands of people come in and out of our community. The university has an opportunity now to stand up for the values they espouse and help these workers, these students, achieve a decent standard of work and life by proposing a fair contract, with a living wage and paid sick days. A great university would do nothing less.

Thank you

Sincerely,
