BLACK RIVER-MATHESON, ON – A labour disruption has been averted in the Township of Black River-Matheson, after members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1490 and their employer agreed to take outstanding disputes to binding arbitration.

The agreement to go to binding arbitration follows several months of negotiation, and a final offer vote, supervised by the Ministry of Labour and rejected overwhelmingly by the union mid-October. In 2014, the workers were locked out by the Township for seven weeks.

Local 1490 represents 16 inside and outside workers in Black River-Matheson.
