Take Action! Stop Library Layoffs at York Catholic District School Board!

As classes resume this year across Ontario, York Catholic District School Board has laid off approximately 30 library technicians – the only board in the GTA to do so. This decision was made as a result of their plans to restrict students from accessing Libraries and their physical resources.

Library techs are vital to students’ education and to the school community. They provide a variety of tech related support, tracking and maintenance for staff and students. This is on top of other work that needs to be done in schools because of COVID-19.

Tell YCDSB trustees that you want to see the layoffs rescinded and the Library techs brought back to work.

Dear YCDSB trustees & Minister Lecce,

Laying off library technicians at YCDSB is a bad decision, at the worst possible time. This decision will hurt students’ ability to recover from the learning losses that happened during the months when schools were closed for learning.

COVID has created so many more demands on all school staff.  It is inexcusable to cut staff at a time when every school needs more staff, not less.  YCDSB trustees must follow the lead of other school boards who have found ways to use library workers’ skills and knowledge to ensure that schools reopen safely.

We urge YCDSB’s trustees to rescind the layoff notices and work with library technicians and their union to make sure that valuable workers remain accessible and available to students and staff.
