Starting on October 4th, 2010 the Put Food in the Budget campaign is running an open challenge to anyone who wants to experience how to feels living day-to-day on standard food bank hampers.  Participants will live off the contents of the hamper plus a select few pantry items in an attempt to understand how it feels to live in poverty and experience it first hand.

CUPE Ontario continues to combat poverty in this province, and CUPE Ontario’s President Fred Hahn will be participating in the challenge.

Hahn Says:

“For me, the “Do the Math Challenge” is a way to put numbers into reality.  While we struggle to ensure dignity and a living wage for our members, others in our communities are struggling just to eat.  To show solidarity with that struggle and to better understand its harsh realities, next week I will “Do the Math Challenge” and write about my experience, posting it on the CUPE Ontario website.”

You can do the campaign yourself or – even better – sign up with a group and do the challenge together!  Please read the information below to get started on the challenge.

To get started, read the Organizational Guide for information on how to participate, how to get people to sign up with you for the challenge and to answer other questions you may have.
