A developmental services worker raised in rural Ontario, Fred Hahn has been an unwavering champion for workers’ rights, both within CUPE and in the larger labour and progressive movement.
Fred’s journey as a local union activist and leader began with roles as a steward, a health and safety advocate, and a pay equity and contract negotiator. Facing cuts from the Harris government, he led the largest developmental services local in Ontario on a 3-month strike that successfully beat back over thirty concessions that the employer was demanding. Alongside his work at the local, Fred served on numerous provincial and national committees, and was elected to the CUPE Ontario Executive Board in 1998.
Fred was elected as Secretary Treasurer of CUPE Ontario in 2006 and in 2010, Fred made labour history by becoming the first openly gay President of CUPE Ontario.
During his time as President, Fred has been a champion for all workers. He oversaw the creation of the Strike Support Committee at CUPE Ontario and made it a top priority to support our members who are on strike, regardless of whether they are affiliated to CUPE Ontario. From organizing solidarity rallies in Toronto, to taking over the streets of Windsor, to bringing buses of supporters up to support strikes in Northern Ontario, Fred built a reputation as a tireless campaigner.
Fred’s dedication to building a strong and diverse labour movement extends beyond provincial boundaries, as he also serves as the General Vice President representing Ontario on the CUPE National Executive Board, and as a Vice President at the Ontario Federation of Labour. He has advocated working in coalition with community justice groups, including the Ontario Healthcare Coalition, the Ontario Childcare Coalition, the Ontario Coalition against Poverty, and dozens more.
A fearless and unwavering leader, Fred Hahn can often be found at the forefront of various workers’ struggles, standing tall at picket lines, rallies, and demonstrations.
