The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada report on residential school abuses was an important step forward in recognizing the injustices First Nations peoples face in our society. Now it’s time to make sure the report’s recommendations are put into action.
The CUPE Ontario Aboriginal Council has started a petition asking the provincial government to enact Call to Action 62.1 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report. The recommendation calls on “the federal, provincial, and territorial governments, in consultation and collaboration with Survivors, Aboriginal peoples, and educators, to make age-appropriate curriculum on residential schools, Treaties, and Aboriginal peoples’ historical and contemporary contributions to Canada a mandatory education requirement for Kindergarten to Grade Twelve students.”
Please join CUPE Ontario and the CUPE Ontario Aboriginal Council in demanding that the provincial government commit to reconciliation through education.
