As we mark World Water Day (March 22) this year, we find ourselves in the early days of a fight to protect the safety and security of Ontario’s public water.

In our province, we enjoy some of safest drinking water in the world, because our systems are publicly owned, publicly operated, and publicly accountable.

Water is not a commodity. Safe, clean, affordable drinking water is every person’s right. But the Ford Conservatives have put that basic human right at risk.

For months, CUPE Ontario has been sounding the alarm about the risks hidden inside the government’s Bill 60 — legislation that was passed without meaningful consultation, without real debate, and without transparency.

There are sweeping changes to essential public services in Bill 60, including changes that allow our water systems to be privatized and driven by profit, instead of quality and public safety.

Workers have been raising concerns about this path to privatization even before it became law. The people who operate and maintain our water systems understand exactly what’s at stake.

On World Water Day, take a moment to sign the petition at keepwaterpublic.ca and demand that the Ford Conservatives protect public water.

Together, let’s demand they keep our water safe, affordable, and public.
