NORTH BAY, BURK’S FALLS and PARRY SOUND, ON – On Labour Day, child protection workers from the Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of the District of Nipissing and Parry Sound will launch a series of autumn “actions” designed to build public support and awareness of the importance of defending high-quality child protection services in the region.
Joining labour allies in the annual Parade of Flags and at the waterfront BBQ organized by North Bay and District Labour Council, members of Local 2049 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) will give away bubble-blowing kits to children and will ask fellow participants for messages of support on postcards that members will take back to share in their workplaces.
CUPE members will also use the occasion to gather names on a petition demanding that the province protect services for vulnerable children, youth and families.
The Labour Day action is the first of several planned by CUPE 2049, whose members are concerned about the quality of child protection services that keep children and youth safe in their communities.
Later this month, members will also meet MPPs for North Bay and Parry Sound-Muskoka to share their concerns and discuss the role that fair and equitable funding plays in ensuring that northern Ontario families, youth and children in crisis receive vital services.
