Workers say they are unable to leave when their shifts end due to a staffing crisis

Chris Judge has been a developmental support worker with Community Living Port Colborne-Wainfleet for 15 years.

In the first 12 years, he has been stuck at the job because there was no one to relieve him maybe three or four times. But in the past three years, this has happened “several dozen times,” once resulting in him being at work for an additional 13 hours.

Talks, which have been ongoing over the issue for about a year, broke down a week ago between the organization and Canadian Union of Public Employees Local 2276, which represents about 100 workers. The previous collective agreement expired in March 2022.

The primary issue in negotiations is staff claims that they are unable to leave at the end of their shift when someone who is supposed to relieve them doesn’t show.
