Thanks to the great mobilizing work we’ve been able to do with the Our Hydro coalition and thanks to all the phone calls and emails that our members sent to their city councillors, Mayor John Tory has announced that privatizing Toronto Hydro is off the table – at least for now.
We want to congratulate all of us who have pushed back against the Mayor’s backroom plan to privatize the electricity system that we all rely on. Today’s announcement shows that when we work together we can win.
This win is one piece in a bigger agenda and we need to stay vigilant in our efforts. At the same time as backing away from the sale of Toronto Hydro, Mayor Tory is pushing ahead with his plan to privatize our garbage collectors, despite the fact that he has been told it is a bad idea. We can’t let this happen.
We also know that Toronto City Council can get a little wacky, so we must not take this victory for granted until the actual budget vote happens at council.
Today let’s celebrate – tomorrow we continue our work to make Ontario a fairer place for everyone.
