PEMBROKE, ON – After just 4 years, Trillium Health Partners, with 850 hospital beds and many operating suites, ended their 10 year contract with SteriPro and brought sterilization of instruments back in house.
This is the same private company that the Pembroke Regional Hospital has signed a multi-year contract with to do the hospital’s surgical instrument sterilization.
The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 1502, which represents staff at the Pembroke hospital has made many attempts to urge the hospital to look at the contracted out company’s performance at other hospitals, says Simone Burger, CUPE 1502 vice-president.
On Monday, March 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. CUPE will hold a media conference at 380 Isabella Street, Pembroke with Joe Ricci, President of CUPE 5180 that represents staff at Trillium Health Partners. Ricci will highlight the quality issues that eventually led to the end of the relationship between Trillium Health Partners and SteriPro.
CUPE did ask that the Pembroke Regional Hospital do a thorough investigation of the performance of SteriPro or complete a comprehensive risk assessment, “we don’t believe that was ever done,” says Michael Hurley president of the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions (OCHU)/CUPE who will also attend the media conference.
