Take Action

Personal support workers are under attack – the Ford government’s regulatory body for PSWs (HSCPOA) makes workers more precarious. While we support PSWs’ right to self-regulation, these proposed regulations deny PSWs the same rights as other regulated professionals (like nurses).

PSWs deserve a seat at the table, and the respect given to other healthcare professions.

Send Premier Doug Ford and Health Minister Sylvia Jones a message advocating for PSWs to have the same rights as other health care professionals.

Additional information about the campaign:

The Ford government’s proposed regulations are unfair to personal support workers:

  • The Director of the new PSW regulatory body can revoke a PSW’s right to practice – with no right to appeal (nurses can appeal such decisions).
  • The board of the new regulatory body won’t have any PSWs on it. In contrast, nurses are represented on the board of College of Nurses.
  • PSWs may be required to pay fees but have no say in determining the rate.

PSWs deserve the same rights as other health care professionals. Learn more about how HSCPOA disrespects workers.

Email text:

I am concerned that the provincial government’s regulatory body for personal support workers (HSCPOA) is unfair and will have a negative impact on the ongoing staffing crisis. I urge you to reconsider these regulations and ensure PSWs have the same rights as other regulated health care professionals. Our health care system has suffered enough due to demoralized staff. We can’t risk further alienating PSWs who perform invaluable work across the health care system.

I am calling on the provincial government to:

  • prohibit revocation of a PSW’s right to practice without clear criteria, evidence, and independent oversight.
  • guarantee PSWs full due process rights, including written decisions, full disclosure of evidence, and the right to call and cross-examine witnesses.
  • establish a mandatory, independent appeal process for all decisions impacting a PSW’s ability to practice.
  • require meaningful, voting PSW representation on the HSCPOA board.
  • prohibit or strictly cap registration fees, with mandatory PSW approval and enforceable affordability protections.

Thanks.
