TORONTO – CUPE Ontario has condemned, in the strongest possible language, last week’s coup d’etat in Honduras.
At a June 30 meeting of CUPE Ontario’s executive board, members voted unanimously to denounce the actions of the Honduran military and elements of that country’s legislative and judicial branches two days earlier.
On June 28, approximately 200 Honduran soldiers rousted President Manuel Zelaya from his residence at gunpoint, placed him on an airplane and flew him into exile in Costa Rica.
In addition to calling on the illegitimate junta to restore the rule of law in Honduras and respect the democratic will of its people, CUPE Ontario has also called on Canada’s government to not recognize Roberto Micheletti as President. On the Friday before the coup, Mr. Micheletti unilaterally declared himself interim president.
