Toronto CUPE Ontario is proud of our tradition of working with and supporting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) organizing including Pride Celebrations across Ontario. In Toronto, where CUPE is the union of choice for workers of dozens of organizations providing services for, and in, the queer and trans communities, it is a source of union pride’ that hundreds of CUPE members march in Pride parades.
This year, during Pride Celebrations in the City of Toronto, 30,000 CUPE members are on strike for fairness and respect against City of Toronto employer concessions. Due to these circumstances, this is a Pride week like no other before.
There should be no doubt, as in past years, CUPE Ontario supports Pride Toronto, Pride Celebrations, and the parades. However, it is imperative that solidaritya key union principle for CUPE Ontariobe upheld. We cannot celebrate Pride the same way as in past years while CUPE members are standing up for their rights, walking the picket line and going without wages.
Therefore, CUPE Ontario will not have an official contingent in the Pride Parade on Sunday or the Dyke March on Saturday.
There is no doubt that, like in previous years, CUPE members, as individuals, will participate in the parade in many ways including, through our political allies, the New Democratic Party, and the organizations where they work.
