Times have changed thanks to the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King. The legacy of Dr. King changed forever the direction of human rights in North America.
Barack Obama, is looking to be the new President of United States based on the theme of Change. But he probably would be the first to admit that he stands on the shoulders of Dr. King as the first credible African-American seeking the highest office in the United States. Similarly, Canada’s Governor General, Michaelle Jean, an African-Canadian woman lives a dream that Dr. King dared to dream.
In CUPE we are on the eve of our first-ever Equity Retreat. Not only does CUPE Ontario have equity-seeking committees but we have reached the point of these committees working closer together to develop a common agenda for our union. We have all seen equity become more and more integrated into our work, collective agreements and communities. It would be hard to imagine all this without the very positive and long lasting legacy of Dr. King.
