WINDSOR, Ont. – Negotiations between Local 1393 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE 1393) and the university will resume tomorrow morning in an effort to resolve the near month-long labour dispute between the two parties.
“We’re very pleased that the university has agreed to resume bargaining,” Dean Roy, President of CUPE 1393, said today.
The resumption in bargaining follows a meeting between Roy, CUPE National President Paul Moist, University President Alan Wildeman, and his chief negotiator, Rita LaCavita.
“There was a recognition by both sides that the only place that we can resolve this issue is at the bargaining table,” he added.
CUPE 1393 represents 282 skilled trades and professional staff at the University of Windsor. Members walked off the job on September 8 after the university refused to back away from concessionary contract demands.
Roy said his bargaining team remains committed to negotiating a settlement and getting campus life back to normal for thousands of students.
“Our meeting with President Wildeman was cordial and both sides recognize that there is too much at stake – the quality of education, the university’s reputation both in community and beyond, and campus and public safety – to not get back to the table and try to resolve the impasse,” he said.
Negotiations are scheduled to take place from Friday to Sunday with the assistance of a provincially-appointed mediator.
