TORONTO, Ont. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) today released a rebuttal to two reports citing large cost savings in contracting out solid waste in the City of Toronto.
Garbage In Garbage Out by CUPE economist Toby Sanger refutes both the C.D. Howe Institute and Toronto Board of Trade reports: The problem is that these reports of potential savings appear to be inaccurate or are highly speculative claims based on flawed analysis.”
Mark Ferguson, president of CUPE Local 416, City of Toronto outside workers who would be affected by any contracting out of collection services says:
First Ford quoted the now C.D. Howe Institute figure of $49M, then during his election campaign he claimed the savings would be $20M, and now it’s down to $8M.
“It is clear that the Ford administration has no idea of what, if any, the savings would be by contracting out collection services. And, keep in mind, Toronto’s collection costs are 30 per cent below the provincial average according to the Ontario Municipal Benchmarking Initiative report released just a few weeks ago.”
