Ontario’s largest union endorses Avi Lewis to be the next leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP).

Based on a unanimous recommendation of its political action committee, the CUPE Ontario Executive Board formalized the endorsement on Monday.

CUPE members in Ontario, and all workers, are encouraged to renew or sign up for their membership in the NDP by this Wednesday, January 28, so they’ll be eligible to vote Avi Lewis for leader this spring.

CUPE Ontario members have long advocated for the priorities at the centre of the Lewis for Leader campaign, including a wealth tax, expanded public ownership, a clear and independent foreign policy, and decisive action on climate change through major investments in renewable energy infrastructure that would create hundreds of thousands of good, unionized green jobs and ensure a fair and just transition for workers.

The NDP is Canada’s only party by and for workers, and it must be unabashedly socially democratic. With Avi’s leadership, the NDP will be more integrated on the ground—present and organizing with people across Canada all year long—with workers’ and renters’ unions, health coalitions, advocates for safe consumption sites, affordable housing activists, Indigenous land protectors, environmentalists, defenders of journalism and free speech, and the host of community organizations that make our civil society work. We also believe Avi to be best positioned to attract the wide array of candidates needed to transform our country’s place in the world.

The energy of the Lewis for Leader campaign is electric! So many workers have already joined the party as members to vote for Avi and this campaign has raised a historic amount of money from tens of thousands of small donations. Avi’s leadership campaign has already begun a transformation of our movement that meets the moment. It’s up to us to finish the job with our votes.
