BRAMPTON, ON — The Ontario Ministry of Labour has issued a “No Board” report, initiating a countdown to a potential strike or lockout involving CUPE Local 831 and the City of Brampton. The union, representing 1,200 municipal workers, will be in a legal strike position at 12:01 a.m. on Nov. 7, 2024; the city could also impose a lockout.
“We have been at the bargaining table working towards a fair deal for our members, who provide essential services to Brampton,” said Fabio Gazzola, president of CUPE Local 831. “Our goal is to reach an agreement that avoids any disruption to these vital services.”
CUPE Local 831 represents workers responsible for road maintenance, enforcement, city hall services, courthouse, animal services, theatres, building and planning, transit, and parks and recreation services across Brampton. The union has been in talks with the city but has yet to secure an agreement on key issues. The “No Board” report signals that both parties are now approaching a legal deadline for job action.
“Our members take pride in maintaining Brampton’s public spaces and infrastructure,” Gazzola said. “We are committed to returning to the bargaining table to find a resolution that works for both the workers and the community.”
CUPE Local 831 remains optimistic that a resolution can be reached before the deadline, avoiding disruption to city services.
