More than 200 people rallied last night outside the Hastings Prince Edward District School Board in support of CUPE Local 1022’s bargaining team, who worked through the night to reach a tentative agreement.
The local, representing 750 office staff, educational assistants, custodial workers, early childhood educators, library technicians, maintenance and other school workers, stated that they would return to work-to-rule if an agreement was not reached.
“These workers are the backbone of our schools,” CUPE Ontario President Fred Hahn said at the rally. “They’re the people that keep the schools clean and safe. They’re the ones that keep them running administratively. They’re the ones who look after the most vulnerable kids in the classes and our youngest learners.”
The local’s bargaining team reached a tentative agreement later that night, which will go to members for ratification.
