Hanover, ON – Demonstrating their commitment to the communities they call home, members of Local 255 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees recently donated $10,000 to various worthwhile causes across the County of Bruce, as well as Grey, Huron and Wellington Counties.
“Our members are extremely proud to live and work in and around the communities we serve. Many of us are involved and engaged in making our communities better when we aren’t on the job,” said Mark O’Leary, President of CUPE 255.
“But we also know that there are a great many worthy causes and agencies throughout the region that enhance the quality of life here for all residents, as well as those that help those in need, and our members want to make sure these sorts of initiatives continue to have the support they need,” he added.
Earlier this month, Local 255 donated $5,000 to community arenas throughout the County of Bruce, as well as the Town of Hanover and the Municipality of Wellington North. An additional $5,000 was donated to school breakfast programs in the same communities.
Since 2012, CUPE 255 has, at the direction of its membership, donated $60,000 to various community initiatives throughout the region.
“For the most part, our members have been doing pretty well for the past few years, but they remember that there have been lean times in the past where these communities were incredibly supportive of us. These donations are our way of saying ‘thank you,’ and letting people know that we’ll always have their backs,” said O’Leary.
CUPE 255 represents over 180 municipal workers employed at Bruce Telecom in Kincardine, Bruce County Highway in Walkerton, Town of Hanover and the Townships of Wellington North and Arran-Elderslie.
