Did you know?

Doug Ford’s Conservative government is close to passing legislation that would take public services away from the Region of Peel. This includes plans to transfer water out of public control and transfer regional road maintenance to the city.

Transferring water to a public holding company removes democratic control. Public water holding companies are investor-owned companies that owns and operates regulated water and wastewater utilities. Their decisions are driven by profit.

This legislation will lead to:

  • Higher taxes
  • Worse and inefficient services
  • Loss of local control of our resources and infrastructure
  • Job losses and lower wages for municipal workers

The Region of Peel provides award winning water services and Peel residents enjoy some of the lowest water bills in the country. During the winter, regional roads are the first to be cleared. Both our water system and roads are maintained by dedicated public workers.

Why would we put that at risk?

Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario: “[We have] to lower municipal development charges … I go back to the business days of half a loaf is better than no loaf, I know development charges mean everything, Mayor Parish has dropped them and Mayor Del Duca and a few others are considering. But you’ve got two choices, if you don’t contribute people won’t build homes and you get nothing or you get half a loaf and we can look at it later. I’d appreciate if you could really consider [lowering development charges] so we can stimulate housing in our province and put it in a timeframe, so we pressure the market to keep moving forward…”

Rob Flack, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing “We know municipalities rely on [development charges] to pay for needed infrastructure, you cannot build homes without sidewalks, roads, water systems, and more … that is why we will ensure you can explore new and innovative models for water and wastewater infrastructure. We have started exploring a municipal service corporation for the Peel Region … while maintaining public ownership. We are going to be encouraging municipalities to cut development charges.”

I am a resident of the Region of Peel reaching out in opposition to Bill 45, which would transfer public services away from the region. I am concerned that this legislation will lead to higher taxes, worse services, and the loss of local control of our resources and infrastructure.

The Region of Peel enjoys world class public services, including some of the highest quality water in the GTA, and some of the lowest water rates in the country.

Transferring water to a public holding company removes democratic control. Public water holding companies are investor-owned companies that owns and operates regulated water and wastewater utilities. Their decisions are driven by profit, not by quality.

I do not support the transfer of public services like stormwater and roads away from the Region of Peel. I am concerned that this will lead to higher taxes, worse services, and the loss of local control of our resources and infrastructure. I urge you to vote against Bill 45 and keep services in Peel in public hands.

Thank you.
