Now it’s 10 CUPE candidates in provincial election
CUPE members and representatives will make up almost 10% of NDP candidates running in the October 10 provincial election. With the nominations of Shaila Kirbria (Mississauga-Erindale), Ric Dagenais (Ottawa-Vanier) and Catherine Robinson who is likely to be acclaimed as the NDP candidate in Durham, CUPE is now fielding 10 NDP candidates in 107 ridings across the province.
Shaila Kurbria, a member of CUPE 1281, served as events coordinator with Ryerson Students’ Union. A well-known Muslim activist, she has been involved with anti-war rallies and was SAC Equity Vice President. Shaila established the first food bank and helped reinstate childcare service at the University of Toronto at Mississauga and was a co-founder of the Black Youth of Canada Coalition Against Violence.
Rick Dagenais is a Collective Agreement Analyst at CUPE National and a former member of CUPE 503. Rick has served on CUPE Ontario’s Executive Board as well as the Ontario Municipal Employees Coordinating Committee (OMECC). Rick is well-known in the Ottawa area, have run for the NDP in the past.
Catherine Robinson is a member of CUPE 2936 and has served for many years as a social worker with Ajax-Pickering Association of Community Living (ACL). Catherine in a long-time party activist and has worked on many NDP campaigns. Catherine is uncontested in the NDP nomination process in Durham.
CUPE Ontario congratulates all CUPE candidates including Henri Giroux (North Bay), John Grima (Essex), Pauline Kuhlmann (Leeds-Grenville), Antoni Shelton (York West); Sid Ryan (Oshawa), Henry Bosch (St. Catharines) and Nigel Moses (Whitby-Oshawa) for running and bringing new energy and members to their respective ridings.
