Stephen Harper may have suspended or prorogued’ Parliament for now, but he’s made a very feeble attempt to stand in the way of democracy.
Hundreds have already gathered on Parliament Hill to support the NDP Liberal Coalition and thousands more will attend rallies this Saturday to support a coalition government. These rallies are being organized by the Canadian Labour Congress.
The labour movement across Canada, including CUPE and CUPE Ontario leadership, is supporting the coalition government because its first priority will be to tackle the growing economic crisis.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper fueled the need for such a coalition when his economic statement failed to deliver a plan to halt the devastation being wrought upon hard-working families. Instead, he chose to attack Canada’s democratic process, violate the rights of public servants to bargain collectively and balance the budget through cuts and the selling off of public assets.
This is an unprecedented period in Canadian history when leadership, not partisan politics, is needed to address economic conditions.
