Sid was elected president of the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) at the Federation’s Bi-annual convention in Toronto earlier today.  After 17 years at the helm of CUPE Ontario our president will be moving over to the OFL to become their new leader.

The OFL represents over 700,000 workers in Ontario and Sid is now set to become the first president from the public sector.

Sid has been a CUPE member since starting work at Ontario Hydro in 1976.  He became CUPE Ontario president in 1992, and has represented over 225,000 of the province’s public sector workers for the past 17 years.

Under Sid’s leadership, CUPE Ontario has become a formidable political voice.

With tremendous energy and with the courage of his convictions Sid has opposed privatization, forced mergers, cutbacks, restructuring and other issues that have affected our quality of life in Ontario. He has also put jobs, wages and working conditions of thousands of working people in the news. Unions, workers and social advocates have benefitted from Sid’s considerable media profile.

Sid led major campaigns and proactively influenced policy and legislative decisions in health care, municipal, school board, social service, pensions, and university sectors—not to mention championing accessible and affordable university education across Ontario.

A General Vice-president of CUPE National, Sid is a passionate champion for workers’ rights and a vocal advocate for human rights and social justice.

It is a sad day for CUPE because we are losing one of the most effective and respected leaders for workers in Canada.  But, we are also extremely proud that our brother Sid Ryan will be leading the broader labour movement in Ontario with the full support of all unions in the Ontario house of labour.
