CUPE to join noon hour solidarity rally for locked and fired
TD Centre skilled trades workers
TORONTO, Ont. Across the province for the past year, employers, emboldened by the economic crisis, are taking aggressive action against unionized workers. A unified labour movement, with private and public sector workers standing together, is the only way to curb the rising tide of anti-worker attacks, like the lockout and termination of 61 members of the Communications, Energy and Paper Workers (CEP), says Sid Ryan, the president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario.
Known as the Cadillac Fairview 61,’ CEP Local 2003 members were locked out by corporate giant Cadillac Fairview, the owners of the Toronto-Dominion Centre, in June. Since then, Cadillac Fairview has terminated’ the workers and attempted to use a third-party service provider’ to handle maintenance and skilled trade duties at TD Centre. Through their union, the Cadillac Fairview 61′ are currently pursuing a complaint of bad-faith bargaining against the employer. The Ontario Labour Relations Board (OLRB) is preparing to hear the complaint, rejecting several attempts by the employer to persuade the board not to do so.
A key goal of today’s solidarity rally is to press the employer and its owner, the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Fund, to negotiate a fair settlement with CEP Local 2003, whose members have an average of 20 years’ service with Cadillac Fairview.
