Claudio Cardoso was killed in January when a heavy steel rack collapsed on him as he was doing his job. In honour of Claudio, and the hundreds of men and women killed at work every year in Canada, several hundred union members gathered in Windsor to observe the annual Day of Mourning.

Speakers at the ceremony included Andrea Horwath and Joe Comartin of the NDP, as well as family members of workers whose lives have been lost on the job. CUPE Ontario President Sid Ryan was in attendance at the powerful and moving ceremony.

Following the ceremony Claudio’s widow Veronica Cardoso, and their two sons Matteo 3, and Mauricio 18 months, led the procession to Reaume Park where Windsor’s monument to fallen workers is located. Red carnations were laid at the monument to honour the dead and injured. Veronica and her sons then released doves which soared into the Windsor sky.
