On Friday, June 12th, thousands of CUPE members from over 100 CUPE locals and dozens of cities across Ontario marched in solidarity with Locals 82 and 543 to help put Windsor back to work. This hugely successful event shows CUPE members’ determination to fight concessions and to win fair contracts. Many thanks from all of us to our member organizers for filling the buses, our rally speakers, and to the Windsor Firefighters Association who graciously cooked and provided refreshments!
At the rally CUPE members called for Mayor Eddie Francis to take concessions off the table and end the strike. CUPE is also pushing for government mediation to end the strike. The city refuses to sit down and bargain, nor will the city agree to government mediation either of which would end this strike. Unfortunately, the city of Windsor is undermining the efforts of striking workers to get back to work for Windsor communities.
Since mid-April, Local 82 representing some 300 outside municipal workers and Local 543 representing 1600 inside municipal workers have been holding the line for the hard won wages and benefits that sustain their local community in the City of Windsor. This strike could be happening anywhere in Ontario. Across the province, more employers are using the current economic crisis to try to extract concessions from workers. Help to send a clear message that CUPE Members won’t let that happen.
